Scalable Scenario-based Earthquake Risk Modeling via Linearized Ground-Motion–Fragility Coupling and Probabilistic PCA

I hosted SoungEil Houng as part of the ongoing NHERI GSC webinar series on simulation and computational methods in natural hazard research.

SoungEil Houng is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at UC Berkeley. Prior to beginning his doctoral studies, he gained professional experience in seismic hazard analysis for nuclear power plant sites in South Korea. He holds master’s degrees in both Seismology and Civil and Environmental Engineering, as well as a bachelor’s degree in Earth System Sciences. His research interests include seismic hazard and risk analysis, with a particular focus on developing scalable computational frameworks for large-scale regional risk assessments.

Generative AI + Virtual Reality: A training tool

Sometime in late 2023, when the generative AI community suddenly shifted its focus to picture and video generation, I started developing a framework to first generate textures of materials based on the description that the inspection guidelines provide. This concept quickly evolves into a framework to generate auditory and visual cues for 3D objects.

The proposed framework

In a conference paper titled “Generative Artificial Intelligence and Virtual Reality: Emerging Future of the Building Component Inspection Training”, presented in CIB WBC CIB 2025, I described this framework in detail. The framework integrates generative artificial intelligence (Gen AI) with virtual reality (VR) to create a more immersive and effective training environment for building maintenance and operations. Traditional training methods often rely on static visuals and text, limiting inspectors’ exposure to the diverse and complex conditions found in real-world scenarios. In contrast, the proposed approach leverages Gen AI to generate realistic textures of deteriorating building components, which are then embedded into an interactive VR environment. This enables trainees to engage in hands-on, immersive practice, improving their ability to identify and assess conditions accurately. The framework aims to reduce subjectivity in inspections and enhance knowledge transfer. A hypothetical case study demonstrates the framework’s potential, highlighting its broader applicability not only in building maintenance but also in other domains that require precise, objective evaluations.

Based at the University of Nevada, Reno, he leads research that informs the design and protection of buried utilities against extreme ground deformation events.

Tourism plays an important role in the growth of urban economies. Attractions like historical buildings that capture the essence of life, streets with the hallmarks of the past, and monuments that act as mementos can be lucrative for local businesses and fruitful for the city’s culture.

The path to an efficient sightseeing tour plan requires both demand evaluation and route planning. This post will discuss only the route planning stage. In most sightseeing tours, there are two active transportation modes working alongside each other: a major mode that usually provides users with a lift to special stations and a minor mode that connects these stations to the desired attractions.

Abstract- As a Graduate Research Assistant at RIDER Center, I conduct multi-disciplinary research on various subjects related to sustainable built environment, automation in construction, data-driven decision-making, and transportation systems analysis. I am also a Ph.D. candidate in Civil Engineering at Florida State University, where I apply my knowledge and skills in Intelligent Transportation Systems, AI, and large-scale decision-making to address complex and dynamic problems in the context of transportation systems. My research focuses on sustainable infrastructure systems, intelligent transportation systems, reinforcement learning applications, and transportation planning under uncertainty.
